Mr. Patterson works in the field of electric utility engineering, concentrating on the areas of planning, conceptual design, commissioning, and maintenance. He specializes in relay protection, communications, and controls for generation, transmission, substation, and distribution schemes. Additionally, he is familiar with engineering and commissioning relay protection and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) for turbine generators, transmission lines, transformers, breakers, and switchgear. Mr. Patterson has served as a subject matter expert for fault analysis and equipment failure root cause forensics. He is the respected author of several technical reports. Mr. Patterson is a registered Professional Engineer in Indiana and Utah.
During his career, Mr. Patterson has implemented a Smart Energy program under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Funding Opportunity Announcement DE-FOA-0000058 (SGIG Program). He served as the project manager for the substation portion of this program. Within a 3-year period, Mr. Patterson designed and supervised the installation of over 320 distribution feeder protection packages, 54 transformer differential and overcurrent systems, and 78 automated tap changer controllers. Due to his exceptional time management and budgeting skills, an additional 5 substations were able to be upgraded during this project.
Mr. Patterson has extensive experience in large scale electrical projects, which include the following:
- Microprocessor generator protection
- New and expanded substation construction
- Boiler flue-gas desulfurization
- SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)
- Projects for adherence with MATS (Mercury and Air Toxics Standards) legislation
- Protection engineer experience for distributed solar cell generation and liaison to the distributed generation customer concerning IEEE 1547 adherence
Mr. Patterson’s experience extends across the globe, including membership in a team which traveled to Cameroon, Africa for point of failure analyses for the country’s electric utility installations. These analyses culminated in a report which offered specific solutions. Additionally, Mr. Patterson’s consulting work has taken him to San Salvador, El Salvador to provide onsite training for protection coordination, fault study analysis, and unique customer protection scheme problems.
